Vile like Juanito

This past July, I had the privilege of participating in the Wesley Pilgrimage sponsored by Discipleship Ministries. It was an excellent opportunity to deepen my knowledge and understanding of John and Charles Wesley, their call and ministry, and the influence of my favorite Wesley, Susana Wesley. The pilgrimage helped me understand the context in which Susana raised the Wesley children and the church in which John and Charles were ordained.

One of the things that fascinated me was John Wesley’s conversion to meet people where they were with the message of the Gospel, even if that meant he had to do what he never imagined he would do. Dr. Ashley Boogan D, General Secretary of Archives and History helped pilgrims understand that preaching in the fields or anywhere other than the church building would have been a huge social “no” in Wesley’s day. But his good friend George Whitefield encouraged John to recognize the movement of the Spirit and to submit to God’s will and not the bindings of society. Finally, on April 2, 1739, John himself wrote in his journal:

“At four in the afternoon, I submitted to be more vile and proclaimed in the highways the glad tidings of salvation…”

It seems to be that John isn’t the first one to “be more vile.” If you look at Jesus’ ministry, being vile comes with the discipleship mandate and denying yourself and taking up your cross. Love motivated John and Charles to do the things that might not have made them very popular but what was needed to reach beyond their circle to the margins. Is this call to “become more vile” what God might call the United Methodist Church today? Are we taking advantage of this moment, what we have been through after the pandemic, to be a church more vile and more faithful to building the reign of God right here, right now?

We want to discuss these questions with you as we look at the effects of the pandemic, disaffiliations, and where the Spirit is calling us in this moment in Hispanic/Latino Ministry in the United Methodist Church at our Latinx pastoral gathering this October in Phoenix, Arizona. ¡Vil como Juanito Wesley!

En julio, tuve el privilegio de participar en la Peregrinación de Wesley patrocinada por Ministerios de Discipulado. Fue una excelente oportunidad para profundizar mi conocimiento y comprensión de Juan y Carlos Wesley, su llamado y ministerio, y la influencia de mi Wesley favorita, Susana Wesley. La peregrinación me ayudó a comprender el contexto en el que Susana crio a los niños Wesley y la iglesia en la que Juan y Carlos fueron ordenados.

Una de las cosas que me fascinó fue la conversión de John Wesley para encontrarse con las personas donde estaban con el mensaje del Evangelio, incluso si eso significaba que tenía que hacer lo que nunca imaginó que haría. La Dra. Parece ser que Juanito no es el primero en “ser más vil”. Si miras el ministerio de Jesús, ser vil viene con el mandato de discipulado y negarte a ti mismo y tomar tu cruz. El amor motivó a Juan y a Carlos a hacer cosas que tal vez no los hubieran hecho muy populares, pero que eran necesarias para llegar más allá de su círculo hacia los márgenes. ¿Es este llamado a “volverse más vil” lo que Dios podría llamar hoy la Iglesia Metodista Unida? ¿Estamos aprovechando este momento, lo que hemos pasado después de la pandemia, para ser una iglesia más vil y más fiel para construir el reino de Dios aquí y ahora?
