Christmas and New Year Message from Executive Director and President of the Committee
As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior, it is an opportunity to take stock of this year that quickly passed us by. In many ways, 2023 was a year of making up for lost time, at least for us at the National Plan. Although even through the pandemic, the Plan continued to offer support and acompañamiento for annual conferences through virtual opportunities for lay mission training. However, there is nothing like being together, sharing in training, and developing strategic planning for engagement in our community.
This past year, the Plan has worked hard to accompany annual conferences with funding and strategic planning, working to create new opportunities to pick up the pieces after disaffiliation. A new cohort of bilingual/bicultural lay leaders and clergy are helping the Plan design a new curriculum to develop new bilingual/bicultural lay missioners, emphasizing public theology.
Our newsletter has reached over 1,500 new subscribers this past year, and our website has tripled in activity, with more to come as we consider even more updates and a new social media campaign.
But the crowning event this year was the long-awaited clergy encounter “Entre Nos” Pastors gathering Phoenix, Arizona, where we heard about the impact of the pandemic and how we can begin again after this season of disaffiliations. We reaffirmed from our conversations that our community continues to be resilient despite significant adversity. We are ready and committed to taking advantage of this moment to develop new ministries committed to being United Methodist, consistent with our values of inclusion of all people.
As we approach the new year, we prepare ourselves for General Conference in North Carolina and present legislation that asks again for continued support for The Plan even as we, like many others, pivot dropping “national,” which is more accurate to the reality of our work throughout the connection and move to be housed at the General Commission on Religion and Race. We do all of this because we have discerned that this moment in our denomination calls for us to adapt to change faster and work even more intentionally to develop stronger partnerships more efficiently and cost-effectively.
The angel said to the shepherds in the field, “Fear not. I bring you news of great joy.” This is the message of Christmas to all of us. As we enter this new year, this is the message we must bring into 2024! We must not allow fear to lead us or determine our future.
We declare that fear of scarcity is not our future because the message of great joy is this: Emmanuel, God is with us!

Mensaje de Navidad y Año Nuevo de la Directora Ejecutiva y la Presidenta del Comité
Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, se presenta una oportunidad para hacer un balance de este año que rápidamente pasó de largo. En muchos sentidos, 2023 fue un año para recuperar el tiempo perdido, al menos para nosotros en el Plan Nacional. Aunque incluso durante la pandemia, el Plan continuó ofreciendo apoyo y acompañamiento a las conferencias anuales a través de oportunidades virtuales de capacitación. Sin embargo, no hay nada como estar juntos, compartir la mesa y desarrollar una planificación estratégica.
El año pasado, el Plan trabajó arduamente para acompañar las conferencias anuales con financiamiento y planificación estratégica, trabajando para crear nuevas oportunidades para recuperarse después de la desafiliación. Un nuevo grupo de líderes y clérigos laicos bilingües/biculturales están ayudando al Plan a diseñar un nuevo plan de estudios para desarrollar nuevos misioneros/as laicos/as bilingües/biculturales, enfatizando la teología pública.
Nuestro boletín informativo llegó a más de 1,500 nuevos suscriptores/as el año pasado y nuestro sitio web triplicó su actividad, y habrá más a medida que consideremos aún más actualizaciones y una nueva campaña en las redes sociales.
Pero el evento culminante de este año fue el tan esperado encuentro del clero “Entre Nos” Reunión de pastores en Phoenix, Arizona, donde escuchamos sobre el impacto de la pandemia y cómo podemos comenzar de nuevo después de esta temporada de desafiliaciones. Reafirmamos en nuestras conversaciones que Nuestra comunidad continúa siendo resiliente a pesar de la adversidad significativa. En nuestro caso, dejamos atras el concepto de “nacional”, ya que la realidad de nuestro trabajo es en toda la conexión. Junto con este cambio de nombre se propone el traslado para ser alojado ahora en la Comisión General de Religión y Raza. Hacemos todo esto porque hemos discernido que este momento en nuestra denominación exige que nos adaptemos al cambio más rápido y trabajemos aún más intencionalmente para desarrollar alianzas más sólidas de manera más eficiente.
El ángel dijo a los pastores en el campo: “No temáis. Os traigo noticias de gran alegría”. Este es el mensaje de Navidad para todos/as nosotros/as. Al entrar en este nuevo año, ¡este es el mensaje que debemos llevar al 2024! No debemos permitir que el miedo nos guíe o determine nuestro futuro.
Declaramos que el miedo a la escasez no es nuestro futuro porque el mensaje de gran alegría es este: ¡Emmanuel, Dios está con nosotros!

PD: A partir de enero de 2024, nos escuchará referirnos como ‘Plan para el Ministerio Hispano/Latino’. Entendemos que nuestra misión tiene implicaciones globales; por lo tanto, abandonaremos ‘Nacional’ para convertirnos en ‘El Plan’.

FACING THE FUTURE 2023
For the first time in the 11 years of its existence, this event witnessed the highest attendance of Hispanic/Latino participants at GCORR’s ‘Facing the Future.’ The event provided tools to better equip attendees as we collectively journey towards building a more inclusive and connected future.
THE ORDER OF SAINT LUKE
The Plan will officially meet with the leadership of the Order of St. Luke to establish a meaningful partnership. The Order of Saint Luke is a dispersed ecumenical order with dual emphases. Firstly, it focuses on sacramental and liturgical scholarship, education, and practice. Secondly, it emphasizes personal spiritual formation guided by the Rule of Life and Service. FACING THE FUTURE 2023
Por primera vez en los 11 años de su existencia, este evento fue testigo de la mayor asistencia de participantes hispanos/latinos en ‘Facing the Future 2023’ de la Comisión General de Religió y Raza (GCORR). COUNCIL OF BISHOPS CALLS FOR PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND
The National Plan joins the voices of the United Methodist people calling for an end to the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The Council of Bishops has made a statement asking for the following:
• Release of hostages and for the killing to stop.
• Immediate allowance of unrestricted humanitarian assistance.
• We denounce acts of and the proliferation of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and hate crimes that may begin with words and often turn to violence directed toward persons whose race, ethnicity or religion is disparaged.
ACTION ALERT: TELL CONGRESS TO CALL FOR A CEASEFIRE IN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE
The General Board of Church and Society, the advocacy arm of our church, urges every member and disciple of Jesus Christ to mobilize by calling on their representative to demand an end to violence and peace for our Palestinian and Israeli brothers and sisters. RACIAL/ETHNIC LOCAL CHURCH (RELC) GRANT
The 2024 Racial/Ethnic Local Church(RELC) Grant and the Annual Conference Multiethnic Ministries Grant applications are now available! These grants are provided to assist local racial/ethnic congregations with projects and programs on one of three areas: 1) Leadership Development; 2) Church Growth and Development; and 3) Pastoral Salary Support.

ACCOMPANIMENT IN ACTION
The Tennessee Western Kentucky Annual Conference celebrates its first newly chartered congregation and we are proud to say that the National Plan is part of that new work. The congregation of Ebenezer United Methodist Church will be chartered on Dec 17th .The National Plan has been a part of the growth and development of Ebenezer under the skillful leadership of Rev. Myriam Cortes. Pastor Cortes has been committed to providing her laity the opportunity to engage in the Plan’s training and development Encuentros and Modules, unleashing them to develop communities of faith that helped to grow the congregation. Ebenezer will celebrate becoming a charted congregation and the first of any ethnicity in the newly formed Tennessee Western Kentucky annual conference. For anyone who ever doubted the effectiveness of our denomination’s ethnic plans, these are the plans at work!

ACOMPAÑAMIENTO EN ACCIÓN

PROTECT THE LATINX VOTE
The executive director will be joining Latinx Faith Leaders from across the nation as we work in unity to protect the vote of our community in these next coming elections. As many of you know, due to gerrymandering and other recent legislations currently being passed in cities and counties across the country, the vote of black and brown citizens continues to be jeopardized and obstacles continue to be created trying to limit our voices through limiting our ability to vote. The Plan will be providing kits of information for your congregations on developing a plan for our church members to vote in this coming election cycle. Stay tuned for more information on this and resources coming your way.
