¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Happy Three Kings Day!

At some point after the sixth, I know I will have to take down the lights and put away the Christmas tree, this always makes me sad. I believe in cycles and following the rhythms and traditions of the Christian calendar and community. It is a healthy spiritual practice to stay in the moment of each season and never to jump ahead or stay in it longer than needed. Coming from a community with the longest celebration of Christmas on the planet, this is hard to do!!

Liturgical seasons help us, and our congregations move to a different rhythm than that of our commercial world. While my local CVS has already put up all their Valentine’s Day decorations, we, in the church, are still at Christmastide and moving into the season of Epiphany. For those of us who know the full weight of the term to “hit the ground running” on the first week of January, the Christian calendar can help us remember that God’s timing and process are beyond our own and we should be grateful.

This means that we can give ourselves space to breathe, to observe, to contemplate and to listen more than we think we can. Allowing ourselves the space to be present in the moment and not trying to rush things or prolong things that should not be. One of my professors in my doctoral program, Dr. Heather Murry Elkins, Professor of Worship, Preaching, and the Arts at Drew Theological School would start our sessions together asking what time it was. She would ask this repeatedly, until we would finally realize that she was not talking about the time on the clock or calendar. She was asking us to think about the season we might find ourselves in and what season our congregations might find themselves in. Sometimes we might be at Easter, but our congregations just might be stuck in Lent. This might never be truer than now.

The season of Epiphany comes with some extra celebrations that might help us slow down if we let it.  We celebrate the arrival of the kings, we celebrate the baptism of Jesus and in our United Methodist program calendar, we celebrate Human Relations Sunday on Jan. 15^th to mark the birthdate of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s tremendous contribution to the work of building the beloved community. Some communities celebrate Chalking the Door, asking God’s blessing. In New Orleans the end of Epiphany is marked by Mardi Gras the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.  You can find resources to help celebrate these on the links provided and information about celebration of Epiphany and Three Kings Day. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo y Feliz Día de Reyes!

En algún momento después del seis de enero, sé que tendré que quitar las luces y guardar el árbol de Navidad, esto siempre me entristece. Creo en los ciclos y siguiendo los ritmos y tradiciones del calendario cristiano y de la comunidad. Es una práctica espiritual saludable permanecer en el momento de cada estación y nunca adelantarse o permanecer más tiempo del necesario. ¡Viniendo de una comunidad con la celebración de Navidad más larga del planeta, esto es difícil de hacer!

Los tiempos litúrgicos nos ayudan y a nuestras congregaciones moverse a un ritmo diferente al de nuestro mundo comercial. Si bien mi CVS local ya ha colocado todas sus decoraciones del Día de San Valentín, nosotros, en la Iglesia, todavía estamos en Navidad y entrando en la temporada de Epifanía. Para aquellos de nosotros que conocemos todo el peso del término “caer al piso a trabajar” en la primera semana de enero, el calendario cristiano puede ayudarnos a recordar que los tiempos y los procesos de Dios están más allá de los nuestros y debemos estar agradecidos.

Esto significa que podemos darnos espacio para respirar, observar, contemplar y escuchar más de lo que pensamos que podemos. Permitiéndonos el espacio para estar presentes en el momento y no tratar de apresurar las cosas o prolongar las cosas que no deberían ser. Una de mis profesoras en mi programa de doctorado, la Dra. Heather Murry Elkins, profesora de Adoración, Predicación y Artes en la Escuela Teológica Drew, comenzaba nuestras sesiones juntas preguntando qué hora era. Preguntaba esto repetidamente, hasta que finalmente nos dábamos cuenta de que no estaba hablando de la hora del reloj o del calendario. Nos estaba pidiendo que pensáramos en la temporada en la que podríamos encontrarnos y en qué temporada podrían encontrarse nuestras congregaciones. A veces podemos estar en la Pascua, pero nuestras congregaciones pueden estar atrapadas en la Cuaresma. Esto nunca podría ser más cierto que en este momento.

La temporada de Epifanía viene con algunas celebraciones adicionales que podrían ayudarnos a reducir la velocidad si lo permitimos. Celebramos la llegada de los reyes, celebramos el bautismo de Jesús y en nuestro calendario de programas metodistas unidos, celebramos el Domingo de Relaciones Humanas el 15 de enero para conmemorar la fecha de nacimiento del Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. y su tremenda contribución al trabajo de construyendo la comunidad amada. Algunas comunidades celebran marcando la puerta con tiza, pidiendo la bendición de Dios. En Nueva Orleans, el final de la Epifanía está marcado por Mardi Gras el martes anterior al Miércoles de Ceniza.
