A Second Chance Moment
There is a painting featured in the latest volume of Christianity Today of the work of Nicaraguan artist José Ignacio Fletes Cruz. It is called “A Second Chance/Una Segunda Oportunidad.” Fletes Cruz presents us with a unique way to view the Noah story. Instead of a means of escaping the wrath of God and a cursed world, Fletes Cruz would like us to reimagine Noah’s ark and family as founders of a new community center embedded in the world that is open to all people—a second chance for all of humanity.
The story of Noah and the flood has always been a troubling one for me. I know it is a foundational story in all three of our Abrahamic faith traditions and that we hear it, especially in the Christian community, when we celebrate or remember our baptism. I have always struggled with the juxtaposition of God’s grace and wrath because God’s wrath always looks familiar to our human ability to give in to anger and revenge and to create conditional and transactional relationships with one another. Oscar Wilde said, “People fashion their God after their understanding. They make their God first and worship him afterward.”
What if Fletes Cruz has a point here? What if we can use this moment of disaffiliations in the history of our church not to invoke fear about budgetary cuts, smaller conferences, or what the future will hold? Instead, what if we considered this moment as our second chance? Instead of developing a means to escape the fear and damaging narratives, we opened this ark wider than ever with enough space and creativity for everyone. It was an ark that held a thriving life where everyone was valued and given the tools to succeed as a beloved community.
The Bible is full of second-chance stories. Moses, Abraham and Sarah, Jonah, Joseph, David, Job, etc. Stories of people who lost everything or everyone they ever cared for and yet dared enough to start again. I believe that this is the moment that we are living, and the opportunity God is giving us.
As for the National Plan, we are committed to seizing this moment. To pivot and realign ourselves strategically to help us continue to live into our mission and that of the United Methodist Church to make disciples of all people for the transformation of the world. Like Jose Ignacio Fletes Cruz calls us to reimagine to create. Not another way to escape the fear of this moment but to faithfully build a community of love, life, and fiesta!

Un Momento Para Segundas Oportunidades
Hay una pintura que aparece en el último volumen de Christianity Today de la obra del artista Nicaragüense José Ignacio Fletes Cruz. Se llama “A Second Chance/Una Segunda Oportunidad”. Fletes Cruz nos presenta una forma única de ver la historia de Noé. En lugar de un medio para escapar de la ira de Dios y de un mundo maldito, a Fletes Cruz le gustaría que volviéramos a imaginar el arca de Noé y su familia como fundadores de un nuevo centro comunitario integrado en el mundo que está abierto a todas las personas: una segunda oportunidad para toda la humanidad.
La historia de Noé y el diluvio siempre ha sido preocupante para mí. Sé que es una historia fundamental en nuestras tres tradiciones de fe abrahámica y que la escuchamos, especialmente en la comunidad cristiana, cuando celebramos o recordamos nuestro bautismo. Siempre he luchado con la yuxtaposición de la gracia y la ira de Dios porque la ira de Dios siempre parece familiar para nuestra capacidad humana de ceder a la ira y la venganza y de crear relaciones condicionales y transaccionales entre nosotros. Oscar Wilde dijo: “La gente moldea a su Dios según su entendimiento. Hacen su Dios primero y lo adoran después”.
¿Seria posible que Fletes Cruz tiene razón aquí? ¿Qué pasa si podemos usar este momento de desafiliaciones en la historia de nuestra iglesia para no invocar el miedo a los recortes presupuestarios, conferencias más pequeñas o lo que nos espera en el futuro? En vez de eso, ¿que si consideráramos este momento como nuestra segunda oportunidad? En lugar de desarrollar un medio para escapar del miedo y las narrativas dañinas, expandimos esta arca más que nunca con suficiente espacio y creatividad para todos y todas. Creamos una arca que alberga una vida próspera donde todos son valorados y se les da las herramientas para tener éxito como una comunidad amada.
La Biblia está llena de historias de segundas oportunidades. Moisés, Abraham y Sara, Jonás, José, David, Job, etc. Historias de personas que perdieron todo o todos los que alguna vez amaron y, sin embargo, se atrevieron a comenzar de nuevo. Creo que este es el momento que estamos viviendo y la oportunidad que Dios nos está dando.
En cuanto al Plan Nacional, estamos comprometidos a aprovechar este momento. Girar y realinearnos estratégicamente para ayudarnos a continuar viviendo nuestra misión y la de la Iglesia Metodista Unida de hacer discípulos de todas las personas para la transformación del mundo. Como José Ignacio Fletes Cruz nos llama a reimaginar para crear. ¡No otra forma de escapar del miedo de este momento sino construir fielmente una comunidad de amor, vida y fiesta! ¡Si, se puede!

BICULTURAL CURRICULUM
We are excited to welcome a new cohort/listening team of bilingual/bicultural 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Latinx this month that will be walking with the National Plan in the process of designing a new set of Encuentros for the development of leaders that will engage in developing bicultural communities of faith committed to public theology. This new training will launch in 2024.

ACCOMPANIMENT IN ACTION
We celebrate with the North Georgia, Pacific Northwest, North Carolina, and Tennessee-Western Kentucky annual conferences, who are in the process of receiving the “matching” funds that the National Plan is offering. These funds will help provide support salary and programmatic so that the Hispanic/Latino ministry continues to thrive during this season of transition. The deadline to apply for this grant is June 15th, 2023.

Celebramos con las conferencias anuales de Georgia del Norte, Noroeste del Pacífico, Carolina del Norte y Tennessee-Oeste de Kentucky, quienes están en proceso de recibir los fondos “equivalentes” que ofrece el Plan Nacional.
