Sacred Darkness

Historically, this Lenten season was also known by the monastic community as the time of sacred darkness. From the time of Saint Anthony, the Great, 250 A.D., reflecting in the dark has always been critical to the life of early Christian communities. Jesus himself taught us, for example, in his earthly ministry, how to prioritize a time set aside for meditation and prayer, and many times his disciples did not know where he was and went out looking for him. The solitude and even darkness were not places unknown to Jesus; he saw them as the place where he could hear the voice of God above the noise of the crowd. No wonder he admonished us that when we prayed, we should go into a closet, in the dark, where no one would see us and where we could not be distracted by others (Matthew 6:6). Perhaps Jesus knows that sometimes, like the religious leaders of his time, we like to be seen to be pious.

I wonder if many of us have a cave where we can hide or if praying among our shoes or clothes in the closet may not inspire us. However, the practice is essential for our pastoral leaders and our laity’s growth. Where is your place of darkness and loneliness? How do you set aside time and intentionality for meditation, prayer, and reflection? Personally, that time is when I walk with my dog, Max. We usually get up early, a bit before the sun starts to rise. For me, it is a mystical, dark, and still moment. I have learned to value that time of silence where I can listen to nature and the voice of the Spirit and ask myself questions. On many occasions, I have heard and seen more clearly in the dark than in the light of day.

Lent is a time of sacred darkness. The Spirit led Jesus into the solitude and darkness of the desert for 40 days and nights. This is how we start this time. Let us take advantage of this time and not rush to celebrate the resurrection without appreciating the magnitude of the dark, silent, and transformative tomb.

I will give you the treasures of darkness
    and riches hidden in secret places,
so that you may know that it is I, the Lord,
    the God of Israel, who call you by your name.

Obscuridad Sagrada

Históricamente, este tiempo de cuaresma fue también conocido por la comunidad monástica como el tiempo de la sagrada obscuridad. Desde el tiempo de San Antonio el Grande, 250 A.D. la práctica de tomar el tiempo de apartarse a pasar un tiempo en reflexión y en obscuridad, siempre ha sido muy importante para la vida de las primeras comunidades cristianas.  Jesús mismo nos enseñó en su ministerio terrenal como priorizar un tiempo apartado de meditación y oración, y muchas veces sus discípulos no sabían dónde estaba y salían a buscarlo.   La soledad y aun la obscuridad no eran lugares desconocidos por Jesús, el los vio como el lugar donde podía escuchar la voz de Dios por encima del ruido de la multitud. Con razón él nos amonesto que cuando oráramos, entráramos en un armario, en lo obscuro, donde nadie nos viera y también donde no pudiéramos ser distraídos por los demás (Mateo 6:6).  Tal vez, Jesús conoce que a veces al igual que los lideres religiosos de su tiempo, nos gusta que nos vean siendo piadosos.

Yo dudo que muchos poseemos una cueva donde nos podemos esconder o la idea de orar en medio de nuestros zapatos o ropa en el armario tal vez no nos inspira.  Sin embargo, creo que la práctica es importante para nosotros y nosotras como lideres pastorales y para el crecimiento de nuestro laicado.   ¿Dónde está tu lugar de obscuridad y soledad? ¿Como tu apartas tiempo e intencionalidad para momentos de meditación, oración y reflexión?  Para mí, ese tiempo es cuando yo camino con mi perrito, Max.  Usualmente nos levantamos temprano un poco antes de que el sol comienza a salir.  Para mí, es un momento místico, obscuro y de quietud.  He aprendido a valorar ese tiempo de silencio donde puedo escuchar la naturaleza, la voz del Espíritu, y también puedo hacerme preguntas a mí misma. En muchas ocasiones he podido escuchar y ver más en la obscuridad que en el pleno luz del día.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo de sagrada obscuridad. Jesús fue guiado por el Espíritu a la soledad y obscuridad del desierto por 40 días y noches.  Así comenzamos esta jornada.  Aprovechemos este tiempo y no nos apresuremos a celebrar la resurrección, sin apreciar la magnitud de la tumba obscura, silenciosa y transformadora.

Yo te entregaré tesoros escondidos,
riquezas guardadas en lugares secretos,
para que sepas que yo soy el Señor,
el Dios de Israel, que te llama por tu nombre.
