Webinar: The Impact of New Immigration Laws on Church Witness

Atlanta, GA – The National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry of the United Methodist Church (NPHLM) in partnership with the General Commission on Religion and Race and the General Board of Church and Society will launch an informative bi-lingual webinar about new state regulations being planned in Texas and Florida that will potentially impact churches serving immigrant communities. “A United Methodist alert about new immigration laws in Florida & Texas” will debut on May 31, 2023 via ResourceUMC.org and Recursos Metodistas Unidos, ResourceUMC.org’s Spanish language platform.

A panel of local organizers from the affected states of Florida and Texas will provide guidance on how local churches and ministry partners can navigate the pending changes while still ministering to these communities.

“When there are laws that prevent us from living into the gospel witness of the church, there should be a holy outcry,” exclaimed Dr. Lydia Munoz who serves as director for the National Plan. “What may appear to be a regional issue can quickly spread to other areas. The concerns raised by the limitations laws of this nature may put on churches should be cause for prayer and action by United Methodists on a global level.”

The webinar will:

·      Explain the laws and the complexity of the issues

·      Lay out the potential impact to communities and congregations

·      Address what it means to walk aside others at this time

·      Touch on ways to officially voice concerns with officials near and far

·      Offer insights on how non-Spanish speaking communities can become allies with immigrants

The National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry will present the webinar in partnership with the General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) and General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR).

“Our goal is to keep the United Methodist community informed and empowered on matters of far-reaching impact. All church leaders, volunteers and members who engage in outreach to migrant individuals and families are encouraged to attend,” added Rev. Dr. Munoz who will co-moderate the event with the Rev. Dr. Giovanni Arroyo (General Secretary, GCORR).

“The work of sharing this vital information is another way in which the church strives to build the beloved community.  When one community hurts, we all should feel the pain as the body of Christ,” noted Arroyo.

Atlanta, GA – El Plan Nacional para el Ministerio Hispano/Latino de la Iglesia Metodista Unida (NPHLM, por sus siglas en inglés) en colaboración con la Comisión General de Religión y Raza, y la Junta General de Iglesia y Sociedad lanzará un seminario web bilingüe informativo sobre las nuevas regulaciones estatales que se están planificando en Texas y Florida y que potencialmente afectarán como las iglesias sirven a las comunidades de inmigrantes. “Una alerta metodista unida sobre las nuevas leyes de inmigración en Florida y Texas” debutará el 31 de mayo de 2023 a través de ResourceUMC.org y Recursos Metodistas Unidos, la plataforma en español de ResourceUMC.org.

Un panel de organizadores locales de los estados afectados de Florida y Texas brindará orientación sobre cómo las iglesias locales y los socios ministeriales pueden navegar los cambios pendientes mientras siguen ministrando a estas comunidades.

“Cuando hay leyes que nos impiden vivir en el testimonio del evangelio de la iglesia, debe haber un clamor santo”, exclamó la Dra. Lydia Muñoz, quien se desempeña como directora del Plan Nacional. “Lo que puede parecer un problema regional puede extenderse rápidamente a otras áreas. Las preocupaciones planteadas por las limitaciones que las leyes de esta naturaleza pueden imponer a las iglesias deben ser motivo de oración y acción por parte de los metodistas unidos a nivel mundial”.

El seminario web busca:

· Explicar las leyes y la complejidad de los temas

· Presentar el impacto potencial para las comunidades y congregaciones

· Abordar lo que significa caminar al lado de los demás en este momento

· Hablar de las formas de expresar oficialmente preocupaciones con los funcionarios cercanos y lejanos

· Ofrecer información sobre cómo las comunidades que no hablan español pueden convertirse en aliados de los inmigrantes

El Plan Nacional para el Ministerio Hispano/Latino presentará el seminario web en colaboración con la Junta General de Iglesia y Sociedad (GBCS) y la Comisión General de Religión y Raza (GCORR).

“Nuestro objetivo es mantener a la comunidad metodista unida informada y empoderada en asuntos de gran impacto. Se alienta a todos los líderes de la iglesia, voluntarios y miembros que se dedican a ayudar a las personas y familias migrantes a asistir”, agregó el Rev. Dr. Muñoz, quien co-moderará el evento con el Rev. Dr. Giovanni Arroyo (Secretario General, GCORR).

“El trabajo de compartir esta información vital es otra forma en que la iglesia se esfuerza por construir la comunidad amada. Cuando una comunidad sufre, todos debemos sentir el dolor como el cuerpo de Cristo”, señaló Arroyo.
