Stepping Out of the Grave

“Because Christ came to enter in our journey, because he broke the silence of our sorrow, because he filled the whole world with his glory and came to light the coldness of our morrow…”

This is how our dear and beloved Bishop Pagura reminds us of the reality of resurrection and its implications. In this season of Easter that we are entering, the resurrection seems to be absurd given all the news and what we are experiencing in our communities. But the lyrics of this hymn remind us that hope is not pretty.

“Because he dealt with all the angry merchants and he declared the evil of their doings, because he lifted every child and woman and put aside the proud and hateful people. Because he bore the cross for all our sorrow, and knew our every weakness and temptation…”

This hope is not full of chocolate bunnies, or spring butterflies no matter how much these symbols attract us.  Hope is born at the moment when you and I no longer have anything to lose and not even death distracts us from our goal.   Dr. Miguel de la Torre says, “Hopelessness refuses to give up, although this implies carrying the cross that leads to crucifixion. ¹ The struggle for justice is what defines the present and can sow seeds that will one day blossom.” It is not that we already see that everything has been fixed in this world, but there is the certainty that together we rise to the hope of today, tomorrow and every day until the end of the world.

The National Plan stands with a Church taking steps out of its own grave.  Many expect to see the death of this denomination, but it is not what we are seeing and witnessing.  During this season of Easter, we will share resurrection stories throughout the connection with you.  Our hope is that they as we see the testimonies of lay missionaries, the stories of new ministries rising, and new opportunities so that you join us in the faith that feeds our hope.  It is the small resurrections that encourage and give encouragement, and that is the reason we have hope.

Since its inception the Plan has always had at its core the value of being contextual and incarnational in its leadership development.  The lay missioner track is an example of this kind of intentionality.  Developing lay missioners that could expand the reach of their local congregation and create new communities of faith with newly arriving immigrant communities.  This work continues to be a part of our mission and vision and will always be so.

However, over the last 10 years in partnership with Discipleship Ministries we have been engaging in serious study and research about the 66% of Hispanic/Latinx who identify as bilingual and bicultural/multicultural.  The 200%, who consider themselves 100% Latinx and 100% US.  This second through fourth generation of Latinx often falls through the cracks of a lot of institutions but none more evident than in the church.  As many other groups, this group finds acknowledges and respects the spirituality of its mothers and fathers, abuelos y abuelas but also has found a source of spiritual nourishment in the discovering of their indigenous roots and the engagement of decentering and decolonizing their experience growing up. 

That is why as our first resurrection story, the Plan is proud to announce a new lay missioner track set to launch in 2024: Bicultural Lay Missioner as Public Theologians. 

To help us the writing and developing of this new training, the Plan has gathered 18 pastors, laity and leaders who currently identify themselves as bilingual/bicultural or multicultural to be serving as advisory to this project. There will be more information to come on this project, but we are excited for the ways that God lead us in new directions.

Saliendo de la Tumba

“Porque El entro en el mundo y en la historia; porque quebró el silencio y la agonía. Porque lleno la tierra de su gloria; porque fue luz en nuestra noche fría…por eso es que hoy tenemos esperanza.”

Así nos recuerda nuestro querido y amado Obispo Pagura de la realidad de resurrección y sus implicaciones. En esta época que entramos de resurrección parece ser absurdo dado todas las noticias y lo que estamos experimentando en nuestras comunidades. Pero la letra de este himno nos recuerda que la esperanza no es bonita.

“Porque ataco a ambiciosos mercaderes y denuncio maldad e hipocresía;
Porque exalto a los niños, las mujeres y rechazo a los que de orgullo ardían
Porque El cargo la cruz de nuestras penas y saboreo la hiel de nuestros males…”

O sea, esta esperanza no está llena de conejitos de chocolate, o mariposas de primavera por más que estos símbolos nos atraen. La esperanza nace en el momento cuando tú y yo ya no tenemos nada que perder y ni la muerte nos distrae de nuestra meta. El Dr. Miguel de la Torre dice, “La desesperanza reúsa darse por vencido, aunque esto implica cargando con la cruz que lleva a la crucifixión. ¹ La lucha por la justicia es lo que define el presente y puede sembrar semillas que algún día florecerán.” No es que ya vemos que todo se ha arreglado en este mundo, pero sí que hay la certeza que juntos a él resucitamos a la esperanza de hoy, mañana y todos los días hasta el fin del mundo.

El Plan Nacional se une a toda una Iglesia que esta en este momento dando pasos fuera de la tumba. Cuando la muerte definitiva de nuestra denominación se esperaba, esto no es lo que nosotros estamos viendo y siendo testigos. Durante esta época de resurrección compartiremos historias de resurrección a través de la conexión con ustedes. Nuestra esperanza es que puedan ver los testimonios de misioneros y misioneras laicas, las historias de nuevos ministerios levantándose, y nuevas oportunidades que estamos viendo para que se unan con nosotros en la fe que alimenta nuestra esperanza. Son las resurrecciones pequeñas que animan y dan aliento, y por lo que tenemos esperanza.

Desde sus inicios, el Plan siempre ha tenido en su centro el valor de ser contextual y encarnacional en su desarrollo de liderazgo. La ruta del misionero laico es un ejemplo de este tipo de intencionalidad. Desarrollar misioneros laicos que puedan expandir el alcance de su congregación local y crear nuevas comunidades de fe con comunidades inmigrantes recién llegadas. Este trabajo continúa siendo parte de nuestra misión y visión y siempre lo será.

Sin embargo, durante los últimos 10 años, en asociación con Discipleship Ministries, hemos realizado estudios e investigaciones serios sobre el 66 % de hispanos/latinos que se identifican como bilingües y biculturales/multiculturales. El 200%, que se consideran 100% latinos y 100% estadounidenses. Esta segunda a cuarta generación de latinx a menudo pasa desapercibida en muchas instituciones, pero ninguna es más evidente que en la iglesia. Como muchos otros grupos, este grupo reconoce y respeta la espiritualidad de sus madres y padres, abuelos y abuelas, pero también ha encontrado una fuente de alimento espiritual en el descubrimiento de sus raíces indígenas y el compromiso de descentrar y descolonizar su experiencia de crecimiento.

Es por eso que, como nuestra primera historia de resurrección, el Plan se enorgullece en anunciar una nueva ruta de misioneros laicos que se lanzará en 2024: Misioneros laicos biculturales como teólogos públicos.

Para ayudarnos a escribir y desarrollar esta nueva capacitación, el Plan ha reunido a 18 pastores, laicos y líderes que actualmente se identifican como bilingües/biculturales o multiculturales para servir como asesores de este proyecto. Próximamente habrá más información sobre este proyecto, pero estamos emocionados por las formas en que Dios nos guía en nuevas direcciones.
