“Cambia todo cambia” (Changes everything Changes) as the song by Argentinian composer and singer, Mercedes Sosa reminds us. Some changes are inevitable. We grow older, our children become adults with lives of their own, and we move from one community to another and we even change jobs. I feel like the later is especially happening all around.

Change in itself can be difficult even when its good for us. We all grow pretty comfortable in our safe places so when its time to change, this is where is becomes uncomfortable to say the least.

Here at the National Plan we are also experiencing change. After a time of searching and discernment I am so honored to be a part of this change as your new Executive Director. This is the plan that was an important part of my call to ministry back in 1992 when it first began. Over the years, we’ve seen many things change but one thing remains the same – a commitment to building an inclusive church where Hispanic/Latinos are welcomed, their leadership valued and ministries in the UMC thrive.

As you probably can attest, change doesn’t happen in isolation at least not for us humans. In order for our change to be successful we have to be willing to seek the help of our fellow change seekers and makers. If an organization is committed to leading from the base then it has to rely on the base to help move, change and grow. This requires trust and engagement.

Like everything that changes, trust and engagement ebbs and flows and it takes intentionality to keep the balance between what the base is saying and what the needs the organization can discern and/or identify.

As ED my goal for the remainder of this year is to build up that capacity through following goals:

1. Connect and provide opportunities for meaningful and intentional dialogue and discernment with constituency. That means you. In order to gain valuable insight into what our communities, clergy, lay missionaries, CLM and many others may need.

2. Build visibility capacity in all the ways that NPHLM is working. We’ve a story to tell! Currently we are building new communication resources that will help us engage in social media, video and blogging. Stay tuned for more.

3. Make the message clear: The National Plan is not just for Hispanic/Latinos but rather it is a tool for church growth and congregational development for the entire United Methodist Church. #BeUMC

None of this can be done without you. I invite you to engage with me. My virtual office is always open and I would love to hear from you, in fact its vital to hear from you.

Now, I don’t know if this happens to you but I often get a lot of people who give me “friendly advice” aka criticism about how I look or how I can increase my exercise routine . It drives me crazy. The truth is it never helps. However, if there is someone dealing with the same issue that I am and they come alongside (acompañar) and say, “hey I’ll walk with you” or “I’ll go to that exercise class with you.” That always feels much more supportive.

All that to say is that we want you to walk alongside us not just say what we have to do. Activist Dolores Huerta reminds us: “Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.” To that word Jesus would add; “Lo, I am with you always even until the end of the age.” Mt. 28:20

My mom and dad’s favorite song was “Divino Compañero” (Divine Partner). They sang it all the time, almost every service my dad was invited to preach at. It became a part of my spiritual formation and still to this day it continues to remind me that everything changes but the presence of the Divino Compañero will always be with me and all of us.

Asi que, pa’lante! Pa’tras ni para tomar impulso!

“Cambia todo cambia” como bien la canto-autora Argentina, Mercedes Sosa nos recuerda. Todo cambia menos el amor. La verdad es que algunos cambios son inevitables. Nuestra edad, cambia. Nuestros hijos crecen y cambian. Nos mudamos de casa, comunidad y nuestros trabajos cambian. Y para muchos de nosotros y nosotras recibimos un nuevo nombramiento. El cambio en sí puede ser difícil aun cuando es para nuestro bien.

Todos y todas nos sentimos cómodas en nuestro lugar seguros y sanos, así que cuando hay que cambiar de este lugar puede sentirse muy incómodo.

Aquí en el Plan Nacional también estamos en medio de cambio para el bien. Después de un tiempo de búsqueda y discernimiento, me siento tan honrada de ser parte de este nuevo cambio como su nueva Directora Ejecutiva. Este es el Plan que tuvo un rol importante en mi llamado al ministerio apenas cuando comenzó en el 1992. A través de los años, hemos visto muchos cambios pero una cosa permanece-un compromiso profundo a crear un iglesia inclusiva donde Hispanos/Latinos son bienvenidos, su liderazgo es valorizado y el ministerio de construir la comunidad amada en la IMU prospera.

Como usted seguramente puede testificar, el cambio no suceden en aislamiento, por lo menos no para los seres humanos. Para que nuestro cambio sea saludable tenemos que ser dispuestos y dispuestas a buscar la ayuda de aquellos y aquellas que también buscan y hacen el cambio. Si una organización es comprometida con la base, o sea con el pueblo entonces también tiene que estar dispuesta de confiar y buscar la ayuda de la base para pueda moverse, cambiar, y crecer hacia delante. Esto requiere confianza y compromiso de ambas.

Como toda relacion, la confianza y compromiso sube y baja como la marea y toma intencionalidad para mantener el equilibrio y balance entre lo que pueblo identifica y lo que la organización discierne para el crecimiento de todos y todas.

Como Directora Ejecutiva, mi meta para este año es de crecer esta capacidad de las siguientes maneras:

1. Conectar más y proveer más oportunidades para el diálogo profundo e intencional para discernimiento con el pueblo. Eso quiere decir tu. Para poder adquirir mejor claridad de las necesidades y retos de nuestras comunidades, necesitamos mejor diálogo entre nuestros cleros/as, laicos/as, misioneros laicos/as, CLM y todo/a aquellos que sirven entre el pueblo.

2. Crear más visibilidad sobre todas las maneras que el Plan Nacional está trabajando y haciendo impacto en nuestra IMU. Tenemos una historia que contar! Estamos en el proceso de crear un estrategia de comunicaciones que nos ayuda a través de las redes sociales, videos, blog, y el lanzamiento de nuestra nueva pagina del web para ayudarnos crear esos espacios de comunicación.

3. Comunicar el mensaje claramente: El Plan Nacional no es solamente para los Hispanos/Latinos, sino que es un herramienta de crecimiento y desarrollo congregacional para la Iglesia Metodista Unida en su totalidad. #SomosUMC #BeUMC

Todo esto requiere tu ayuda para que sea un éxito! La crítica está bien siempre y cuando es acompañada con el deseo y intencion de hacer eso mismo “acompañamiento” el caminar juntos/juntas hace toda la diferencia. La gran activista de justicia social, Dolores Huerta dice, “Cada momento es un oportunidad para organizarse, toda persona es un activista en preparación, y cada momento es un oportunidad para cambiar el mundo.” Jesus nos recuerda en Mateo 28:20, “Yo estaré contigo hasta el fin de los tiempos.”

“Divino Compañero del Camino” es un himno que mis padres cantaban frecuentemente. Tanto que formó parte de mi desarrollo espiritual hasta el dia de hoy. Me recuerda que todo en la vida puede cambiar pero el Divino Compañero promete estar con nosotros y nosotras siempre. No hay que temerle al cambio con una promesa así.

Asi que, pa’lante! Pa’tras ni para tomar impulso!
