Choosing the Beloved Community
We are now entering election season. Some are already exercising their right to vote in this country, while others in our community simply yearn for a day to exercise the privilege. We hear in the news the division and hostility because there is much on the balance. But I wonder if in our Hispanic/Latino context is something new. Many of us have lived in places where the elections in our countries of origin are a time marked by violence and military occupation. Where voting is an act of life and death. Even in the most democratic countries in Latin America, we know there are problems with intimidation and corruption. We come to this country thinking that things will be different, but we find that it’s not all true, especially during this year where it appears to be more of what we thought we left behind in our countries.
May God help us and have mercy on us.
However, there are not only elections at the national level in this country but also in our United Methodist Church. This week the 5 jurisdictions will be electing new bishops across the connection. This will not be easy because it is not an easy time.
I have always believed that the social and political dynamics of this country are reflected in the dynamics of our denomination. The same divisions, the same controversies, indeed the same emotional and spiritual violence exist in many of our meetings. Right now, we are choosing not only for people who have responded to the episcopal call, but we are also choosing for the Church that we want to be.
Just as we are choosing for the kind of nation we want to have, we are also discerning the church we will be today and tomorrow. Could it be that the dream of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to create a Beloved Community in this country is also the option that you and I vote for?
Is it possible for this beloved community to begin with us called the United Methodist Church? These elections may be the beginning.
So be it.

Eligiendo la Comunidad Amada
Ya entramos en la temporada de elecciones, y para algunos y algunas ya están ejerciendo su derecho de votar en este país, mientras otros en nuestra comunidad simplemente añoran por un día poder ejercer el privilegio. Escuchamos en la noticia la división y la hostilidad en estas elecciones pues hay mucho sobre el balance. Pero me pregunto si en nuestro contexto Hispano/Latino es algo nuevo. Muchos de nosotros y nosotras nos ha tocado vivir en lugares donde las elecciones del país son un tiempo marcado por violencia, ocupación militar y ejercer el voto es un acto de vida o muerte. Aun en los países más democráticos en Latino América, sabemos que hay problemas y corrupción. Llegamos a este país pensando que va a ser diferente, pero nos encontramos que no es cierto y últimamente en este año en particular este país se parece más y más a lo que muchos de nosotros y nosotras pensábamos que dejamos atrás. Dios nos ayude y tenga misericordia.
Pero no solamente hay elecciones a nivel nacional sino también en nuestra Iglesia Metodista Unida. Esta semana las 5 jurisdicciones estarán eligiendo nuevas obispas y obispos a través de la conexión. Esto no será nada fácil porque no estamos en una época fácil. Yo siempre he opinado que las dinámicas sociales y políticas de este país se reflejan en las dinámicas de nuestra denominación. Las mismas divisiones, las mismas polémicas, es más la misma violencia emocional y espiritual existen en muchos de nuestros encuentros. En este momento, estamos eligiendo no solamente por personas que han respondido al llamado episcopal, sino también estamos eligiendo por la Iglesia que queremos ser.
Igual que estamos eligiendo por la clase de nación que queremos tener, también estamos discerniendo la iglesia que seremos hoy y mañana. ¿Será que el sueño del Revdo. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. de crear una Comunidad Amada en este país también sea la opción por la cual tú y yo votemos?
¿Será posible que esta comunidad amada comience con nosotros y nosotras llamados la Iglesia Metodista Unida? Estas elecciones pueden ser el comienzo.

INTER-AGENCY COLLABORATION
In the month of September, the National Plan had the opportunity to meet with the various agencies that work in collaboration with the Plan to carry out its programmatic priorities. The spirit of collaboration and camaraderie is palpable between our meetings. There is a desire to work on behalf of the people and respond to the needs that our pastors, lay men and women, and missionaries have been asking for. Needs such as more resources and tools in Spanish and Portuguese, bilingual materials for spiritual growth and training that continue our commitment to contextualize the resources of The United Methodist Church for our community.
WEBINAR FOLLOW-UP
The event hosted in partnership with the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) and United Methodist Communications (UMCom) was a success providing information about the future of Hispanic/Latino ministry in the United Methodist Church. We are in the process of creating a resource to provide acompañamiento to local congregations during this time of change.

COLABORACIÓN CON AGENCIAS
En el mes de septiembre, el Plan Nacional tuvo la oportunidad de reunirse con las diversas agencias que trabajan en colaboración con el Plan para llevar a cabo sus prioridades programáticas. El espíritu de colaboración y compañerismo es palpable entre nuestras reuniones. Hay un deseo para trabajar en favor del pueblo y responder a las necesidades que nuestros pastores y pastoras, laicos y laicas y misioneros han estado pidiendo. FACING THE FUTURE
We invite you to participate in this virtual event for pastors who are serving in non-Hispanic congregations (Cross Racial/Cross Cultural). It is an opportunity to connect with colleagues and develop tools to be able to exercise this important calling for our Church.
JUST TREATMENT OF MIGRANTS
The press conference, held at the United Methodist Building in Washington D.C. was convened by the National Plan in collaboration with GBCS, GCORR along with Inter-Ethnic Strategy Development Group, and United Methodist Leadership. This event was an appeal to government for just treatment of migrants.
MARCHA RESPONDS TO THE JUDICIAL COUNCIL MEMORANDUM
MARCHA (Methodists Associated Representing the Cause of Hispanic/Latinx American), the denomination’s Hispanic and Latino caucus, published a response to dissenting opinions related to Memorandum published on 10/26/2022, by the Judicial Council of the United Methodist Church in connection to Bishop Minerva Carcaño, who has been suspended since March.

Este evento fue un llamado al gobierno para un trato justo de los migrantes.

MARCHA (Metodistas Asociados Representando la Causa de los Hispano Americanos), el caucus hispano y latino de la denominación, publicó una respuesta a las opiniones disidentes relacionadas con el Memorándum publicado el 26/10/2022 por el Consejo Judicial de la Iglesia Metodista Unida en relación con la obispa Minerva Carcaño, quien está suspendida desde marzo.

UNITED METHODIST COULD BE THE FIRST LATINA ELECTED TO CONGRESS FROM THE MIDWEST
Illinois state representative Delia Ramirez is running for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, and if she prevails as the strong favorite in November’s elections, she will be the first Latina congresswoman from the Midwest in U.S. History.
Delia was born and raised in a United Methodist Church in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Her parents arrived at that church with a nine month old Delia.
MOUNTAIN SKY CONFERENCE
We celebrate with the Mountain Sky Conference and its commitment to Hispanic/Latino ministry. Plan Nacional will be equipping and training new lay missionaries and helping their leadership with a new strategy to continue mission with Hispanics/Latinos at this conference. We thank God for the work already accomplished and the paths opened by those who sowed the seed of the gospel. Forward Mountain Sky Conference!
BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON CONFERENCE
We celebrate with the Baltimore-Washington Conference and the newly elected leaders of the conference’s Hispanic/Latino Committee. The National Plan has been working with this committee previously to start a new strategic plan, which was presented to the entire assembly. The Plan will continue to accompany the Baltimore-Washington conference and its leadership in its important work. Always praying for God’s direction.

METODISTA UNIDA LATINA PODRÍA SER ELEGIDA PARA EL CONGRESO
La representante del estado de Illinois, Delia Ramírez, se postula para el Congreso de los EE. UU. en el 3er Distrito Congresional de Illinois, y si prevalece como gran favorita en las elecciones de noviembre, será la primera congresista latina del Medio Oeste en la historia de los EE. UU.
Delia nació y se crió en una Iglesia Metodista Unida en el vecindario de Belmont Cragin. Sus padres llegaron a esa iglesia con una Delia de nueve meses.
CONFERENCIA MOUNTAIN SKY
Celebramos con la Conferencia de Mountain Sky y su compromiso con el ministerio Hispano/Latino. El Plan Nacional estará equipando y entrenando nuevos misioneros laicos y ayudando a su liderazgo con una nueva estrategia para continuar la misión de con Hispanos/Latinos en esta conferencia. Le damos gracias a Dios por el trabajo ya logrado y los caminos abiertos por los que sembraron la semilla del evangelio. ¡Conferencia Mountain Sky, Adelante!
CONFERENCIA DE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON
Celebramos con la Conferencia de Baltimore-Washington y los nuevos líderes elegidos del Comité Hispano/Latino de la conferencia. El Plan Nacional ha estado trabajado con este comité previamente para comenzar un nuevo plan estratégico, la cual fue presentada a la asamblea entera. El Plan seguirá acompañando la conferencia de Baltimore-Washington y su liderazgo en su importante labor. Orando siempre por la dirección de Dios.
